Bike Tri-Cities Mission Statement

Bike Tri-Cities is the cycling advocate for our Community leading the Community in promoting cycling as a safe, healthy, sustainable, and fun form of transportation and recreation.

Community and Organizational Partners

Complete Streets Ordinances (CSO). Complete Streets is a national movement that promotes accessibility for all users. (At the writing of this document, West Richland, Pasco, Kennewick, and Richland have adopted CSO). Bike Tri-Cities (BTC) will work with and encourage the Community to adopt and develop their respective Complete Street Ordinance by the respective municipal agencies which will provide for street designs that will safely meet the needs of all users, including cyclists, pedestrians, motorists, and public transportation users while protecting and preserving Community environment and character. With the adoption of a Complete Street Ordinance, BTC assists the Community in obtaining funding through Washington’s Complete Streets Bill. HB1071 and WA-RD 780.1: “Washington’s Complete Streets and Main Street Highways Program Case Studies and Practice Resource” as prepared by Washington Department of Transportation, Nov. 2011. The program provides funding for transportation improvements that “improve the health and safety of Washington Residents”.

Community Bicycle Friendly Community- League of American Bicyclists. We continue to provide advocacy, support, and leadership for the establishment of a Community Bicycle Friendly Community (see League of American Bicyclists - “The Blueprint”). We hope to achieve certification for at least one City by 2024. We will continue to identify and provide support and leadership for a Bicycle Friendly Community steering committee including representatives of public and private agencies (identities to be determined) within the Community, interested and vested partners within the private sector. Community representatives will have vested interests in
the five “E’s” – Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, and Evaluation as outlined and detailed in “The Blueprint”.

Benton Franklin Council of Government (COG) Advisory Committees. We will continue/increase contribution(s) to the Benton Franklin Council of Government (COG) Advisory Committees. We will also work with traffic engineers and city planners on completion of the COG Bicycle-Pedestrian Report, and the COG Traffic Management Plan. We will also work to maintain a seat on the COG Traffic Advisory Committee.

Washington State Department of Transportation Bicycle/Pedestrian Surveys in the Community. We will continue to work with jurisdictions, cycling clubs, and civic organizations to identify sites that we know will provide more accurate information on cycling statistics in our Community and obtain 100% coverage for these revised sites.

The Benton Franklin Community Health Alliances’ Healthy Lifestyles Committee (HLC). BTC is committed to preventing and reducing obesity in our Community. To this end we have partnered with The Benton Franklin Community Health Alliances’ Healthy Lifestyles Committee (HLC).

Visit Tri-Cities. Through BTC’s influence, Visit Tri-Cities continues to promote cycling in the area to boost the local economy (LAB, Attributes of a Bicycle Friendly Community, Encouragement, #8) We continue to encourage the inclusion of a cycling map centerfold in the Wine Trails & Art promotional piece produced by Visit Tri-Cities and support of bicycle and winery visits to northwest outdoor writers.

Washington State University (Tri-Cities), through our efforts, promotes cycling and seeks recognition through the League’s Bicycle Friendly University program (LAB, Attributes of a Bicycle Friendly Community, Encouragement, #11).

Columbia Basin College, through BTC efforts, promotes cycling and seeks recognition through the League’s Bicycle Friendly University program (LAB, Attributes of a Bicycle Friendly Community, Encouragement, #11).
